The Basics Of Menopause And Hair Loss

Women lose their hair for different reasons, but many women can almost count on menopause to be one of the times when they will experience thinning hair.  The one good thing however, is that the hair loss is temporary and the hair does grow back in time.  The best way to lessen hair loss during menopause is definitely through preventative measures.

It takes three months for hair loss to become noticeable from the time it starts.  If you start to experience menopause and hair loss around the same time, the hair loss is probably due to changes in hormones and medications that help you through this part of your life.  Your doctor may tell you that there isn’t much to do medically, and in a way he is right.  However, there are many things that will help re-grow hair.

The Causes

Looking first at the connection between menopause and hair loss will help. Other than stress and medication, hair loss can be caused by many things, the most common being low thyroid function, which is typical during menopause. The changes in hormone levels that are caused by menopause are also a factor in hair loss.  This will include the increase in testosterone along with the drop of Progesterone levels because of lack of ovulation in the body.  The body compensates by producing extra androstenedione, which slows down hair growth.

Slowing Down Hair Loss

There are several ways to get through menopause and hair loss. Waiting it out is the easiest option, because most women will find that after menopause they will see the re-growth of most or all of their hair.  If you decide to take this route, there are cosmetic procedures you can use like coloring or cutting your hair to make you feel better.  If you want to be a little more pro-active, diet and herbal remedies can help re-grow hair faster.    Soy, which boosts the levels of estrogen in most women, can be used to lessen the effects of hormone-related hair loss.

Herbal scalp massages that use rosemary or tea tree oil help to re-grow hair.  The combination of stimulating the follicles and supplying nutrients to the hair itself is what makes the hair stronger and grow faster in this case.

At home laser treatment may be another option to consider when dealing with menopause and hair loss. At home laser treatments are administered with a laser comb that uses soft, rotating, low-light lasers to re-grow hair.
